Home Essentials · Ceramic soap dish with drainage

A ceramic soap dish with drainage cut into the base so the bar dries between uses instead of sitting in a puddle.

Stoneware, 12 by 9 cm, with a ridged floor that lifts the bar off standing water and a channel around the rim that carries runoff away from the sink ledge. It comes in four glaze colors.

Most soap dishes fail at one job: getting water away from the bar. Ours is stoneware fired at a high enough temperature that the body is fully vitrified, meaning it will not absorb water the way a low-fire earthenware dish can, and the floor is ridged rather than flat so a bar rests on raised lines instead of a wet sheet of ceramic.

A shallow channel runs around the inside edge of the rim and drains toward one corner, so runoff does not pool under the bar or spill over the side onto a windowsill or vanity top. It sits flat on any counter without a rubber foot, which we left off on purpose — a foot traps moisture underneath and is usually the first thing to grow mildew on a cheaper dish.

What the glaze is doing

Glaze is not paint sitting on top of the clay; it is a glass layer fused to the stoneware body in the kiln, which is why it will not chip off in a sheet the way a painted finish can. Along the ridges you can see the glaze pool very slightly darker where it ran thicker before firing, a normal result of the ridged shape and not an inconsistency between pieces.

Four glaze colors are available: a warm clay, a pale stone, a muted sage and a deep charcoal. Each is food-safe and dishwasher-safe, though we suggest hand rinsing since a dishwasher cycle does nothing a rinse under the tap does not.

Where it earns its spot

A pedestal sink with no built-in soap ledge, or a kitchen sink edge where a bar of dish soap otherwise turns to mush by Thursday. It is a small purchase and we treat it as one — no bundling required, and buying just this one dish is a normal-sized inquiry as far as we are concerned.

Linen bins are stitched, not glued, at the corners, and that same standard of not cutting a visible corner applies here: the drainage channel is molded into the piece before firing, not carved in afterward or added as a separate part that could crack loose.
